Lasagna Gardening: The Leaf Layer

How convenient that I'm at the stage in my "lasagna" beds that requires a layer of leaves. I've put down the newspapers and covered them with mulch and compost, hoping to choke the grass and weeds. Since the leaves are arriving by the truckload in my yard right now, I'm just raking them onto the beds

After I put the leaves on, I throw a little compost on top of them and give it a good watering.

Still making good use of the gymnastics mat. I put it on top of the leaves and rotate it around from bed to bed. It spends a week or two on top of each bed, matting down the leaves and making things gooey underneath.

    Well, Good muck to you! Being surrounded by the woods, we rake/blow our leaves into the beds in the fall as well. Thanks for stopping by my place!

    Sometimes it helps with decomposition to add a bit of bloodmeal to the leaves too. Just pure nitrogen but don't add it if you have dogs that can get to it.

    Tina, great tip! Unfortunately I do have a dog but am open to other soil ammendments. I may try manure.

    I'm so glad to see this post. With all the garden reading I do, I still had no idea what Lasagna gardening was, but I had the same idea. I'm going to do it because I'm running out of space in all the flower beds!
