Pumpkin Hurl

Yesterday was our annual Pumpkin Hurl. It occurs on the day when we can no longer stand to look at the shriveled, moldy carved jack-o-lanterns on the front steps.
The Hurl is best performed by boys between the ages of 5 and 10 years old, and it’s usually no trouble getting them to oblige. Each pumpkin is carried up to the deck, and hurled, as forcefully as possible, into the woods behind our house. I have to admit, it’s a good feeling. (For me, the good feeling is more about being able to tell my son to "go ahead and destroy" something, and "make it messy".)

The results are always interesting.

I pick up the bigger hunks and put them in the compost, but most of the “guts’ are left for the taking. I don’t get any complaints from the wildlife back there. And it’s rare for me to see any of it after the snow melts in the spring.

Fun! My pumpkins get hurled over the fence into the compost heap. Better than being hurled into the street by young miscreants.

That's hilarious! And a good, fun way for them to let go of their creations without sadness. I usually go for the sureptitious (sp?) compost dump and confess later.

They return to mother nature!

Nice tradition! Were you inspired by David Letterman? He used to, maybe still does, drop watermelons from NYC rooftops onto sidewalks below. Spectacular displays!

I put my pumpkins by your front door and ran. I don't want to see the carnage. This is a funny post. Now that you mention it--my pumpkins are a bit mushy.

Since ya'll seem to think this looks fun, I hope you'll save me your rotten pumpkins next year. Bring them over and we'll have a pumpkin hurling party on my deck, and invite all the racoons and squirrels over to clean up. We'll invite David Letterman, too!
