Glazed and Confused

Last night the weather report predicted “glaze.” Now bear in mind that I am from the South. Until I moved to New York 20 years ago, I never needed anything heavier than a denim jacket in my wardrobe. And in the 20 years that I’ve been here, I’ve experienced blizzards, sleet, hail and other non-Florida phenomena, but never “glaze.” I didn’t know what to expect. So for anyone else not aquainted with it, here are a few photos of it. It does resemble frosting dripping off the sides of a cake.

Ice skating on the driveway, anyone? Yep, the road is iced over too. Doesn't this look like it would be fun to drive on?
To make things even more befuddling, our school district calls at 5:30 a.m. to say that school is on a TWO HOUR DELAY. So I get up at 6, scrape off the car, sprinkle melting pellets all over the driveway and pull the car out to make sure that I can get the kids to school later.
Then the school calls back again at 7:00 to report that school is now CANCELLED. Sigh. I go back to bed. When I get up two hours later the rain has melted everything.

That’s not the only dripping that’s going on – I’m referring to the dripping from my nose. Here’s a little sample of what I’ve been putting into and onto my body in recent days. No wonder my head is so foggy.
If you have any indoor or outdoor dripping going on, I hope it dries up soon!

Yow, Jen, you got it worse than we did! (As a fellow Southern transplant, I sympathize. I have NEVER gotten used to winter driving!) And good luck with that cold! I try to ignore colds but MUST be able to breathe or I go into total panic mode. What do you take for that that actually works? I'd love to know! Loved your post title, by the way! Led Zeppelin's one of my all-time faves!

I walked in the glaze today... VERY glazed and sneaky--spots that appeared safe to walk on were very slippy.

then the rain, and ... I can only imagine what will happen overnight. I was all alone at the park today, and that's unusual!

hot whiskey for your cold .

Weather conditions here today were pretty much the same as yours. But by day's end, temps dropped and everything is frozen again. I fear that the next few cold days will be a terrible sheet of ice everywhere. Oy.

Sorry about your cold. If it makes you feel any better, this is the perfect icy time to stay indoors and rest! Get well soon.

See, it's better to move the OTHER way, north to south; no bad weather down here--at least not much. But I sure know what it's like to drive in what you experienced.

I agree with Squirrel; a little whiskey rather than otc medicines.

Yikes to the glaze, sorry about your nose! All that cold meds stuff messes with me, makes me hyper, doesn't help so I have stopped taking it. Wish I knew a good herbal remedy... steeped thyme infusion sometimes helps with a cough. Feel better!

Hi,
Thanks for visiting Cackleberry Cottage! I keep the chickens in their own pen. I do sometimes let them out in the yard. One dog will not bother them. The other will sometimes chase them util I yell. They are both small dogs.
Blessings,
Lorilee

Tina, thanks - I am feeling better now.

Ben, unfortunately, nothing worked. I hate to treat a cold this way but I went to the doctor and ended up with antibiotics and prednisone (I'm asthmatic, too). At least I can breath again.

Yeah, Squirrel, I was even slipping on the GRASS the other day. Wild.

Joanne, hope things have thawed out up there in CT. Bright and sunny here today (Friday)

TUT, I often wonder what I'm doing up here. Most people retire in Florida where I come from. In fact, that was my parents' main reason for moving there.

Anon, steeped thyme huh? I happen to have a dried up thyme plant in my dining room right now. It would be nice to have a use for it.

Thanks, Loralee. I actually wouldn't mind my dog chasing the chickens so much. It's getting it in her mouth and shaking it around that I'm worried about ;-)
