Macro in a Mason Jar

Here are some possible entries in the “Macro in a Mason Jar” contest, which is being run by photographer David Perry over at the Gardening Gone Wild blog.  I usually shy away from photo contests because I’m not a very accomplished photographer, and my current equipment is beyond cheap – a Samsung SL600 that was free in bag of conference swag.  There really was no excuse not to participate in this one, though, because it was designed for fearful point and shooters like me.   See the rules and technique description here.

I tried a few things.  First a head of red cabbage.

Then an orange pepper.
Not sure, but I think the idea here is not to be able to see the jar.  If so, this is probably not an ideal photo.    Above you can see how I set this one up.  The jar is resting on the cut pepper.

Some salted almonds.

And the setup.

And then, because it was handy, some Guiness Stout.  The bubblier the better.

Which one do you think I should enter?

They're all very good, but I like the red cabbage the best.

I vote for the almonds, and here's why. First, I think the almonds are a unique subject matter that not too many people, if any, will do, so they will stand out.

And second, I love almonds and could live on them. These ones look so good, I could reach right into the computer screen and snack on them. Go almonds!

Good luck :)

I think you did terrific! But I really love the Guiness Stout - the condensation on the sides of the jar and the bubbles on top - just looks wonderful. The almonds are also terrific. They make me want to reach through the screen and grab them!

I enjoyed your close-up view of the red cabbage. Very simple and yet it shows off the wonderful wavy lines of the cabbage leaves just perfectly.

Really interesting 'experiments'!! I think I like the orange pepper the best...just 'cause it's colorful and different..but they're all very cool. I had a very hard time making a decision with my own!

I think the cabbage is the best. It's the photo that brought me here. The pepper idea is a clever one.

The Guinness is interesting, but I vote for almonds.

I'm torn between the cabbage and the stout but if I had to choose I'd go with the cabbage. It's beautiful

both the almonds and the cabbage are good, it took me a while to realise what it was. but i think the almonds are special because of the salt thats around them looks like its suspendd in mid air.

I have to choose the foamy Guinness but that's possibly b/c I have a love affair with coffee foam. The picture of the nuts is in some ways the most textural (do I even know what I mean by that??) but I still vote for the foam. Nice job!

I'm sooooo glad I stopped by here today.

LOVE the first pepper and the stout. The almonds have a lovely texture, tho, so that would be my third choice!!!

Girl, what CAN'T you do?????
